Set within two acres of English countryside in the picturesque village of Farley Green near Albury. The site is located outside of an identified settlement area within the Surrey Hills Green Belt. The original plot contained a part single and two storey detached dwelling with a substantial amount of outbuildings. The ‘Project Brief’ and challenge was to replace the existing dwelling with a luxury low energy detached home achieving an Energy ‘A’ Rating status.
The powerful architectural design for the new home is surprisingly sympathetic to the immediate and local surroundings with minimal visual impact, taking account of its 5200ft2 gross floor area. Achieving the desired goal of creating a new contemporary designed luxury low energy home, that is an example of the best of modern architecture and build. The home benefits from a versatile layout capturing natural light from all angles with stunning exterior and interior features to delight any end users. The luxury specification includes a Poggenpohl kitchen, Philippe Stark bathrooms and a bespoke atrium art installation by the renowned 3D Artist Lisa Traxler.
The integration of the inside and outside spaces was achieved by designing an ‘upside down’ house, with the main living spaces on the upper level taking in views of the Surrey Hills stunning backdrop scenery.
The home has been constructed using innovative modern constructional methods and elements, namely Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) on an insulated raft foundation as part of a ‘Fabric First’ approach to construction. Incorporating the latest and very best in renewable energy technologies with high levels of insulation and air-tightness has achieved exceptional levels of energy efficiency and extremely low CO2 emissions, has meant the house achieving an ‘A’ rating on its Energy Performance Certificate. The home also features an outdoor swimming pool heated from renewable energy sources.
In comparison to more conventional systems, the renewable energy technology incorporated into the design means that approximately 80% of the home heating, hot water and cooling demands are provided for free as its powered by the solar energy and in return provides the end user with the ultimate high standard of comfort and flexible indoor living environment, at extremely low running costs; controlled by its intelligently-automated smart home system.
