Striking contemporary house design receives planning permission for a replacement property in Surrey.
A 1960’s home sat perched on a cliff edge, overlooking the historic market town of Godalming, adjoining the Godalming Hillside. The detached three-storey private house and the integral garage is of little architectural merit and as a result, makes very little contribution to the street scene.
The existing house elevations are of facing brick walls and mix of timber and PVCu windows, external doors and cladding. The challenge set by our client to create a contemporary house design replacing the existing house. In addition, a new car parking platform was to be integrated into the overall scheme development. Also, the design had to carefully consider the site’s impact on the Hillside and surrounding heritage features.

A contemporary design solution…
The first planning application consisted of replacing the existing property in its entirety. The second application formed an extensive remodelling of the property in lieu of replacement. The two design concepts reflecting in similar contemporary house design and fashion to each other; and of which subsequently both received planning permission.
The design of the new house is of contemporary appearance with large areas of glazing allowing views out over the site and rolling landscape beyond. With a simple lightweight cantilevered flat roof sections combined with the choice of high-quality materials and crisp detailing further enhance the design concept. The chosen palette of materials allowed the building to blend within nearby neighbouring properties and improve significantly the views from Godalming town centre.
A luxury open plan layout…
A striking design resulting in creating a light, ‘open plan’ contemporary home layout featuring stunning outlook views over the town. The ‘open plan’ arrangement, large glass panels and double vaulted glazed entrance hall ensure natural light fills through the home. Also, our design of the home achieves respecting the surroundings and neighbouring buildings.
In addition, a full-width glass box stands out along the rear elevation of the home forming a successful feature. Also, this feature allows us to maximise the flooding of natural light into the interior of the rooms.
Above all, the large glass areas enable occupants within the prime rooms to enjoy breathtaking views over Godalming and beyond. As such, the eye-catching design creates a stunning home as a result of carefully mixing areas of large glass panels with crisp detailing and other wall cladding materials. The strong exterior and interior features create strong focal points and excitement, that will be a delight all end users…
